Little girl With A Big Plan in Life

Last weekend, I had an interesting chat with my niece . It was a nice chat as she finally opened herself to me. She is closer to my sister than to me as she has this unpredictable mood swing and a very fussy girl. I can't really tolerate with her (smile)but still I tried my best to teach her to think about her future. It was out of the blue and taken me my surprised when she suddenly told me about her plan. I was dumbfounded when she told me of her next venture in two years time.

She told me that she wanted to start working and have money on her own. She wants to be a designer. I know she has the talent to be one as when she was in primary one she has started drawing her own cloths and was very picky when choosing her flowergirl dress and shoe. She said she has made a deal or pact with three of her friends. They will start a business of selling clothing. She will be their designer, her friend Antonia will sew and the two will help in marketing their line of cloths. How good is that?

I am happy that she has a plan this early but I am worry she plan to start it , their 'so called' business venture when all of them turn thirteen. Yes, she said they will move from their parents hourse, rent an apartment and live by themselves. How scary is that?

Do you think they are under pressure? I can't quite understand. Do more and more girls are having pressure now? Has Hanna Montana has anything to do with this? Do you think they have pressure to have more money, to earn so that they can buy something to enchance their looks,to look beautiful, to change the way they dress or may be they want to build their self esteem. I need to find out what is happening with my niece. It could be a good sign she being far sighted but I think moving out when you are thirteen is still too early unless she received a scholarship to study elsewhere like I did.

In case some of you are not aware Dove has started a program called The Dove Self-Esteem Fund. It was established to inspire and educate girls about a wider definition of beauty and is committed to reaching 5 million girls globally by 2010 with self-esteem programming. You can read more about it here. Do read more about the campaign. You will be shocked to know that only 2% of women all over the world described themselves as beautiful. The good news is, since 2006, the Dove brand has conducted nearly 2,700 self-esteem educational workshops around the world. I know this is happening globally and I wish the same program and campaign will reach our country soon. Meanwhile I wish to bring the awareness of this program and hope we can participate in educating our kids that beauty comes from within and help them to create a high self esteem within them. I will start with my own daugher and I hope you can do the same to your own kids or even your nieces. We are beautiful, in and out. Period.

I need to have a chat with Darlene as soon as possible.

It is quite scarry with the younger generation thinking nowadays.. Call me old fashion, but I dread when that happens. I think they can pursue their dreams like joining competition and all, but the idea of moving out at the age of 13? *chill bones* Maybe they need to play R. Kiyosaki games about financial stuffs.. hehehehe

Wow...I thought they were 16 or so already! Your niece is so, so matured.

I think it's admirable they've got a business plan and all. I think they really know what they are doing.

When I was a full-time Mum, the MNC I worked at was a sponsor for the Young Entrepreneurs (YE) program founded by the American-Malaysian Chamber of Commerce.

Part of my role as a media officer was to visit the sponsored school, interview the students and then promote the YE works to the media.

I was really impressed because these are 15 year olds with everything thought out i.e. budgeting, marketing, human resources and customer service. Your niece is right on track :)

Btw, we will be celebrating my son's 3 year old birthday in Kuching next year. Would you know any homebakers there who can make a Thomas the Train cake or cupcakes???

It's not my hometown so I don't know it that well. Only know about Secret Recipe, which of course, pricey! Would you let me know please?
